Hi boys & Elaine,
Welcome Elaine to 'the Weekender' with all the information you probably
didn't want to know about NZ !

And how was everyone's week?
Well tonight is another night of useless TV. For some reason over the last
few months the TV people have decided that Monday would be a good night to
screen all the blockbuster movies. Of all the strange and silly things to
do! Maybe that's over or just maybe it's just a temporary flash back to
boredom.

And the big news in sport over the weekend has to be David Tua. No the
fight hasn't happened yet but by this time next week all of NZ is hoping
we will have a boxing champion (maybe Elaine could stop by Vegas for a
look!). To put it into perspective though, it looks like everyone
including former NZ boxing great Barry Brown is picking Tua to lose - lets
hope not!
The Rugby league World Cup is continuing in Andrew's part of the world
with NZ having made it into the semis (?). It seems the champ of the
moment is 21 year old Lesley "Volcano" Vainikolo, the Canberra winger just
happens to be a Christian by the sounds of it! He's scored six tries
including a hat trick against Wales.

The weekend also saw the Telecom National sevens rugby tournament in
Wellington. It was preparation for the World Series starting in two weeks.
The final saw North Harbour thump Waikato 52-12 - well at least we made
the final.
... which is barely what the New Zealand Cricket team did in the ODI
series against South Africa. South Africa wrapped up the series 5-0 in a
last ball thriller with SA needing 3 off the last ball, and getting a
four. My question has to be "what was Shane O'Conner doing bowling the
last over?????"

In other sports news, Micheal Campbell stormed back in the Volvo Masters
with a course record to come third, NZ Maori are out of the Rugby League
World Cup, Tara-Lee Marshall won the womens Florida ironman triathlon, and
the Soccer Kingz lost their last game (2-4 to Northern Spirit).
And in some tragic non-NZ news, Anna Kournikova is out of the Leipzig
tournament :-)

Enough of sport: Prominent Maori leaders are again bringing up the word
holocaust to describe their 'invasion'. No one seems to mention that they
wanted the English to help defend them from the French!
Most tourists are saying that the renewed problems in Fiji aren't really
affecting their holidays - and they'll be cheap too!
There was some big flooding over the weekend with roads impassible in the
Coromandel and Northland - although that's nothing on England, hopefully
Andrew hasn't been washed away! (just maybe some of the pigeon
droppings!!)
On the plus side (for firemen) the rain dampened Guy Fawkes weekend,
although the infamous CYC fireworks went ahead - me and Jordan just got
wet!
Here's one for Rodney: A group occupying the old Meremere power station
have delayed their departure for a day. Apparently they are pursuing land
claims against Tainui and have environmental concerns with Genesis (the
owner).
Maori have given a resounding "no" to genetic modification - I would have
to assume that those that spoke didn't have anyone sick (MS etc) in their
families.

Ok that's probably enough, I have to go home for tea!

Have a good one.

Darren.
