The Weekender 03/01/2001
Well I always start with sport so I guess the cricket with the Black caps comes first. Following on from the last weekender, due mostly to the rain, the test match ended up in a dismal draw. The one dayer yesterday unfortunately did not, with Zimbabwe winning by 70 runs after getting 300.
Waikato's Scott Styris bowled the last over & gave away 20! Although Chris Harris didn't do much better giving away 41 runs off his 5 overs.
In the youth sailing championships in Sydney, the NZers jumped up to 4th place.
Ok, it's summer & it's new years. I could tell you the scores for the womens beach volleyball - but hey, it's just not the same as watching it and there isn't much other sport on right now!
Last week I forgot to mention petrol prices. They've all dropped again with "one day specials" down to 91.9 (for 91) before Christmas and 86.9 (for 91) after Christmas. The prices are currently hovering around 91-93c.
The Police are rolling out the new 'traffic cops' cars. They are white with blue & yellow markings, and have been painted in Hamilton (just below the Avalon Dr overbridge).
There is a new sub division being started opposite Lake Rd (the Gordonton Rd end), I've never really thought of places out there, but with Hamilton growing north so rapidly I guess it makes sense.
Well it wasn't us but there were over 100 arrests at The Mount on New Years eve. Julian, Jordan & me cruised over to check out the scene & there were lots of people there! They behaved themselves until about 1:30am (well after we had left) when the organisers stopped the band because the protection fence had been pushed over - enter the riot police. Other trouble hot spots were Napier, and worst of all was Nelson!
The weather over the New Years was incredibly changeable. There was everything from huge downpoars to beautiful sunshine, repeated every half hour or so - it was really crazy. In fact, almost as crazy as those US weather men. After having heard about the bad effects of El Nino (the 1 in 7 year weather pattern) every year for the last 5 years or so, it seems they are now blaming their crazy weather patterns on NOT having an El Nino! Go figure is about all I can say on that one...
Well, I'm due at Shane & Michelles to help with some terra-forming. Bye.
