The Weekender 08/01/2001

The Weekender 03/01/2001
Submitted by weekender on Wed, 03/01/2001 - 13:00Well I always start with sport so I guess the cricket with the Black caps comes first. Following on from the last weekender, due mostly to the rain, the test match ended up in a dismal draw. The one dayer yesterday unfortunately did not, with Zimbabwe winning by 70 runs after getting 300.

Let's start off with soccer. On Saturday the Football Kingz came out with a 1-1 draw to get a valuable point. Wynton Rufer made it look easy getting a goal just before half time. And Wellington is looking like it will host the World Cup qualifier between NZ & Australia which may help our chances.

Submitted by weekender on Tue, 12/12/2000 - 10:00On Saturday just a few kms from home at Turangawaewae, Michael Campbell took out the top Maori sports award. And so he should, he's been doing spectacularly in the last year. In the four-day World Cup tournament, Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner who had previously been in the lead, had a shocker of a final round to finish 6th.

Submitted by weekender on Mon, 13/11/2000 - 13:00I guess from all the wailing an nashing of teeth you would have heard from
NZ, you would realise the sadness of David Tua's failure to take the World
Heavyweight Championship. He stuck it out and did a really good job,
especially considering he was suffering from damage from Round 2 on (from
a previous injury). We'll forgive him - as long as he keeps it up and wins
again!
At least we won the Rugby. Thank goodness NZ beat France, it at least
makes up a little bit for losing in the Rugby World Cup - and what is the

Submitted by weekender on Mon, 06/11/2000 - 13:00Welcome Elaine to 'the Weekender' with all the information you probably
didn't want to know about NZ !
And how was everyone's week?
Well tonight is another night of useless TV. For some reason over the last
few months the TV people have decided that Monday would be a good night to
screen all the blockbuster movies. Of all the strange and silly things to
do! Maybe that's over or just maybe it's just a temporary flash back to
boredom.
And the big news in sport over the weekend has to be David Tua. No the

Although the NPC is over there is still plenty of sport to be had, so
getting right into it: Russell Coutts has won gold at the Bermuda regatta,
Scott Dixon has won the final race of the Indy Lights to win the
championship. It looks like next year, he has a ride with a proper Indy
team. A useless bit of trivia but Scott was actually a camper at CYC and
Shane was his cabin leader! Apparently he told Shane back then that one

Submitted by weekender on Wed, 25/10/2000 - 13:00Well the big game this weekend was obviously the NPC final with Canterbury
vs Wellington. It was a very good game and with the whole lounge out in
support of Wellington (the underdogs) it was good to see them come away
with a win. It was incredibly nervous in the last 5 minutes as the ref
refused to blow the whistle for the Wellington win with Canterbury camped
on the Wellington goal line.
So we lost the cricket to South Africa (by 6 wickets), the Warriors have a

From the big world wide news we have the headline "Orphan has a rough
start to life". It seems a baby donkey was born some time during Saturday
night on the dark lonely hills of Christian Youth Camps at Ngaruawahia in
New Zealand. By time Cherie, Jeremy & me got to it, the mother was in a
bad way with bleeding etc. The baby was soo cute (ok well not as cute as
